How to Send a Virtual Gift Card

By the VCCFinder editorial & research team·Reference for virtual card shoppers·Last updated 11 Oct 2026·About our methodology

Digital gift balances, virtual cards as gifts, and the difference between sending value and sending a card credential.

Sending a gift card and sending a virtual card are different things with different rules. One transfers a stored balance to a recipient, the other hands over a card credential that behaves like a payment card.

A gift balance is not a card

Most digital gift cards are a stored-value instrument tied to one merchant. The balance only works at that merchant, never expires in some cases and expires in weeks in others, and cannot be refunded as cash.

That single fact is why a gift balance will clear at a clothing retailer and fail at a subscription renewal without any warning from the merchant.

Sending a card credential instead

You can issue a virtual card and send the details, which works across any merchant the network accepts. This is what platforms like Apple Pay sharing and card issuing APIs are built for, and it is the right tool when the recipient needs to spend anywhere rather than at one store.

It also carries the sender's risk: until the recipient has funded it, or if the issuer's terms allow spending above the loaded amount, you may end up covering a bill you did not intend to give.

What you can control before sending

Set a per-card ceiling that matches what you intend to give, restrict the merchant category if the platform supports it, and make the card single-use if it is going to one store. Single-use is the strongest protection against a leaked digital gift being drained.

Send the details through a channel you would trust with a password, and expect the recipient to trigger a verification step on first use.

Choosing between a gift balance and a card

Use a merchant gift balance when you know the recipient will buy from that one store. Use a virtual card when you want the recipient to spend anywhere, and set a ceiling before sending so an unexpected charge cannot go beyond what you intended to give.

The single-use card is the strongest option where the platform supports it, because a leaked credential cannot be drained by anyone else. Where single-use is not available, set the card to expire quickly and remove it from any wallet you shared it through.

Frequently asked

Can you send a virtual card as a gift?

Yes, where the issuer allows it. Set a ceiling first and prefer a single-use card so a leaked number cannot be drained.

Is a digital gift card the same as a virtual card?

No. A gift card is a stored balance for one merchant. A virtual card is a card credential that works wherever its network is accepted.

Do virtual gift cards expire?

It depends on the issuer. Some single-use credentials expire on first use, others after a fixed window. Check the terms before sending.

Can a recipient use a virtual gift card at any store?

Only if it is a card credential. A merchant-specific gift balance will not clear elsewhere.
