How to Pay for Linode with a Virtual Credit Card

What we would pick

Mountain Wolf, Crypto.com Card, Bybit Card. If the first one trips the AVS check, move to the next instead of retrying the same card.

Linode rejects cards for five reasons and four of them are fixable in ten minutes. The list below is the shortcut.

Why Linode turns your card down

A card picked at random off a marketplace will fail Linode roughly half the time. The BIN range matters more than the balance sitting on the card.

Both fixes are on your side of the transaction: match the card's country to the region your Linode account is registered in, and paste the issuer's billing address without editing it.

Cards that worked on Linode

The three we would actually use

Paying Linode with a virtual card, start to finish

  1. 1

    Open the account

Every card here wants an ID up front. It is an automated check and rarely takes more than a few minutes. Do 2FA before the first deposit, not after.

  2. 2

    Load a small balance

Fund with USDT if you need it today, bank transfer if you can wait a day. One month is plenty to prove the card works. Mountain Wolf charges 0% per top-up.

  3. 3

    Create the card

You can spin up more than one card here, which is worth doing: Linode gets its own, everything else stays off it. Set the limit just above the plan price.

  4. 4

    Enter the details at checkout

There is an address check. Crypto.com Card issues a US General address. Paste that one, because AVS fails on a single wrong character.

The OTP lands in the issuer app. Approve it, then check the account, because a charge can sit in pending after the bank has already said yes.

BIN ranges worth trying on Linode

Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.

Where these cards are issued

Every range above is tied to an issuing country. When a merchant turns one region away, the same brand frequently issues from a second one — the country pages below collect those.

Narrowed it down to two of the cards above? These head-to-head pages put their issuance fee, top-up fee, KYC tier and the merchants we test into one table, so the call is easier to make.

Questions we get asked

Will a virtual card actually work on Linode?

In our tests, yes. We ran 23 cards against it in September and the 10 below are the ones that went through. Failures were almost all range blocks rather than balance problems, and 211 issuers in our database carry a positive flag for this merchant.

Why is my normal bank card declined by Linode?

Region, mostly. Linode routes through an acquirer outside your home market, and that acquirer checks the card's issuing country against your account region first. Your bank never sees the charge, so nothing shows up as fraud on your side.

Which one is cheapest for Linode?

On our numbers Mountain Wolf leads at 9.7 out of 10. The rest is down to top-up cost: waived top-up fees matter more than a lower issuance fee once you are past month one.

Can I use a card with no KYC for Linode?

2 of the 10 cards above are listed as No KYC: Paycek, Pikabao. They work, but they decline more often and the fees are worse than an issuer that takes an ID.

What does Linode cost in total?

The card fee is the smallest part. What you actually pay is a top-up charge on every reload plus the Linode plan. 6 of the 10 cards here skip the issuance fee entirely.

Do I have to keep the card open between Linode renewals?

Yes, unless you plan to re-enter the card every month. Freeze it between charges if the issuer supports that; closing it means starting over at the next renewal.

How we test

23 cards went through a live Linode checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
