Cancelling a Zip Card

What happens to the balance, the recurring payments and the number when you close a card.

Closing a card is easy and the consequences are easy to miss. The balance, the subscriptions attached to it and the merchant copies of the number are what need attention first.

Check what is attached before you cancel

Recurring payments continue to be attempted after a card is closed, and each attempt produces a decline rather than a clean cancellation. Reviewing what is attached in the issuer's app, or with the merchants, avoids that.

Where a subscription is worth keeping, moving it to another card first is less disruptive than replacing it later.

What happens to the balance

A card with a credit balance either converts it to a statement credit, is refunded to the payment method, or is written off depending on the issuer and on whether the balance is positive or negative.

A prepaid balance behaves differently and is more likely to be forfeited. Checking before closing avoids losing it.

What happens to the merchant's copy

A merchant that has stored the number keeps it. Closing the card stops future authorisations, which is the protection that matters, but the stored credential is not erased by your cancellation.

Where the exposure was the concern, a ceiling set before closing is irrelevant because no further authorisation can succeed. The protection was always in the cancellation.

The order to do it in

Review what is attached, move anything worth keeping to another card, check what happens to any remaining balance under the provider's terms, and only then close it. Closing first and discovering the balance afterwards is the common version of this.

Screenshots of the attached subscriptions are worth keeping before you close anything.

Frequently asked

How do I cancel a Zip card?

Through the issuer's app or website. Check the recurring payments attached to it first so they do not fail afterwards.

What happens to the balance when I close a card?

It depends on the issuer and on whether the balance is positive or negative. A prepaid balance is more likely to be forfeited.

Do subscriptions stop when I cancel my card?

No. The merchant still attempts the charge, and each attempt produces a decline until you update or cancel the subscription.

Can a merchant still charge a cancelled card?

No. Authorisation is refused once the card is closed. A merchant holding the number cannot charge it, which is the protection.
