Can You Use a Zip Virtual Card Anywhere?
A Zip virtual card works at most places that accept Visa, online and in stores, but it is single-use and weak on holds.
Anywhere Visa is accepted, with the usual carve-outs for holds and deposits.
What the Zip virtual card is
Zip, formerly Quadpay, is a buy-now-pay-later service. Instead of integrating into each retailer's checkout, it generates a single-use virtual Visa card inside the app for the amount you want to spend. You enter that number at any online checkout that takes Visa, and the total is split into four installments over six weeks.
Because the card is a normal Visa to the merchant, the retailer does not need a Zip partnership. That is the entire appeal.
Where it works and where it does not
Online, it works at the long tail of Visa-accepting stores, including marketplaces where Zip has no direct integration. In store, the in-store card is added to Apple Pay or Google Pay and used at contactless terminals. Amounts must cover the full cart including tax and shipping.
The weak spots are holds and deposits. Gas pumps, hotels and rental companies place pre-authorisations that can exceed the card's exact amount, and those transactions are where single-use virtual cards most often fail.
Using it without surprises
Generate the card when you are ready to check out, because the number is created for one purchase and expires quickly. Keep the amount slightly above the cart total so tax and shipping do not push it over. If a merchant blocks prepaid or virtual-style numbers, the payment declines no matter whose card it is.
Fees vary by plan and purchase, so the app is the source of truth for what a given transaction costs.
Frequently asked
Can I use my Zip virtual card anywhere?
At most merchants that accept Visa, yes. The exceptions are places that place large holds, such as gas pumps, hotels and rental counters.
Is the Zip virtual card reusable?
No. Each purchase needs a new card generated for that amount. Once used, the number is done.
Can I use Zip in a physical store?
Yes, through the in-store card added to Apple Pay or Google Pay at contactless terminals.
Why did my Zip card decline at a gas station?
Pump pre-authorisations often exceed the issued amount, and single-use cards only cover the figure they were generated for.
