Why Is My Virtual Card Not Working?
Most virtual card failures come from expiry, amount mismatches, billing address errors or merchants that block virtual numbers.
A declined virtual card is almost always one of five boring causes.
Expiry and single-use limits
Single-use cards are the most common casualty. A Sezzle card expires 72 hours after creation if unused. A Zip card is generated for one purchase amount and dies after that purchase. A promotional prepaid card has a printed expiry months out. Using yesterday's card for today's cart is the single most frequent failure.
The fix is to generate the card at the moment of checkout, not in advance.
Amount and billing mismatches
Virtual cards issued for an exact amount decline when the cart total exceeds it, including tax and shipping. Billing address mismatches are the other classic: the address you type must match what the issuer holds, character for character in the ZIP and street fields.
For merchant-locked cards, a decline also means you are at the wrong merchant, even a parent company processing under a different name.
Merchant-side blocks and spending power
Some merchants block prepaid and virtual-style numbers outright, especially for subscriptions and high-risk categories. On the buy-now-pay-later side, a card can also fail because your estimated spending power or approved limit is lower than the amount you tried to create.
If a card declines everywhere including simple purchases, the card itself may be frozen. Check the app for a lock toggle before assuming the merchant is at fault.
Frequently asked
Why is my Sezzle virtual card declining?
Usually the amount requested exceeds the card, the 72-hour window has passed, or your estimated spending power is short. Cancel and create a new card.
Why does my virtual card work on some sites but not others?
Some merchants block virtual or prepaid numbers, and merchant-locked cards only work at the vendor they were issued for.
How do I fix a billing address decline?
Enter the billing address exactly as your issuer holds it, including the correct ZIP or postcode and any apartment number.
My card was frozen without me doing it. What happened?
Some platforms freeze cards automatically after suspicious activity. Check the app for a lock or security notice, and contact support if it persists.
