Who Accepts Sezzle Card Payments?

By the VCCFinder editorial & research team·Reference for virtual card shoppers·Last updated 11 Oct 2026·About our methodology

Sezzle as a payment method and the Sezzle card are accepted in different places, and conflating them causes most declined checkouts.

Sezzle can mean a payment option at checkout or a card issued on your account. They share a brand and almost nothing else, and the difference decides where you can actually pay.

The payment option and the card are separate

At checkout, Sezzle as a payment option lets you split an eligible purchase into instalments and is available only where the merchant has enabled it. The Sezzle card is a card credential that works wherever its network is accepted, subject to the limit attached to your account.

A merchant showing Sezzle instalments at checkout does not necessarily accept the Sezzle card, and a merchant that takes the card does not necessarily offer instalments.

Where the card works

Anywhere the underlying network is accepted, subject to the issuer's rules and your assigned limit. The card behaves like an ordinary credit card at the point of authorisation, including at physical terminals where the card is accepted.

Preauthorisation on rentals, hotels and car hire can hold more than the final bill. Release timing varies and is worth checking if a hold affects your limit for a few days.

Why checkouts decline

The usual causes are an instalment option being selected where the card is needed, an insufficient assigned limit, a merchant category the issuer does not support, and a billing address that does not match the account.

Selecting the card rather than the instalment option resolves most of these, and the decline reason is usually shown on the merchant's payment page rather than in the card's own app.

Workarounds when a merchant refuses

Where the merchant offers the instalment option but not the card, paying with a different credential for that purchase is usually simpler than finding a merchant that takes the card. The reverse applies too: a merchant that takes the card will not always offer instalments.

The address on the account matters in exactly the same way as with any card. A mismatch between what the issuer holds and what the merchant sends produces a decline with no obvious cause.

Frequently asked

Can I use the Sezzle card anywhere?

Wherever the card network is accepted, subject to your assigned limit and the issuer's merchant category rules.

Does a merchant that offers Sezzle instalments accept the Sezzle card?

Not necessarily. The instalment option and the card are separate products and a merchant may support only one of them.

Why was my Sezzle card declined at checkout?

Most often the assigned limit is too low, the billing address does not match, or you selected the instalment option where a card was required.

Does the Sezzle card hold a preauthorisation on hotels or car hire?

It can, as most credit cards do. The hold can exceed the final bill and usually releases within several business days.
