Paying for Hulu With a Virtual Card: What Actually Passes
Chime, COCA, Privacy.com. If the first one trips the AVS check, move to the next instead of retrying the same card.
Hulu is one of the harder checkouts we test. Not because of the price, but because it re-verifies the card on every renewal. Here is what held up in September.
Why Hulu turns your card down
The decline is a BIN mismatch. Hulu bills through an overseas acquirer, and that acquirer compares three things: the country your card was issued in, the billing address on file, and the country your account is registered in. Two out of three is not enough.
Cards that worked on Hulu
10 of the 100 issuers we track carry a positive flag for Hulu. Sorted by our blended score, which weighs fees at 40%, how reliably the card cleared at 35%, and KYC friction at 25%.

The three we would actually use
- We like Chime mainly for the funding side. no top-up fee per top-up adds up if you pay monthly, but it is still the lowest of the cards that worked.
- We had COCA fail once, on a Sunday, then succeed on the retry. Worth knowing before you write it off.
- Privacy.com scored 9.0/10. Nothing about it is remarkable except that it kept working when others stopped.
Paying Hulu with a virtual card, start to finish
-
1
Open the account
All 3 ask for an ID before the first card exists. The check is automated and usually clears in minutes. Turn on 2FA before you fund anything.
-
2
Load a small balance
USDT and bank transfer both work. Crypto lands in minutes; a transfer is cheaper but can sit overnight. Load one month first.
-
3
Create the card
Multiple cards per account, so keep Hulu on a dedicated one. Lock it to the merchant and cap the spend. Both take seconds and neither costs anything.
-
4
Enter the details at checkout
AVS is on here, so the US General address on Chime has to go in exactly as issued. Copy it out of the app; do not retype it.
-
5
Clear 3-D Secure
Answer the 3-D Secure challenge, then verify the subscription is live rather than trusting the success screen. Pending charges do happen.
If it still will not go through
Between them these cover almost every failed attempt we have logged.
- Billing address mismatch (Chime issues a US General address). AVS compares what you type against the address on file, and it fails on a single transposed digit. Paste it instead of retyping.
- Card left frozen from the last test. Issuers sometimes freeze a card after unusual activity and never tell you. Check the app before blaming the merchant.
- Virtual BIN blocked. Some acquirers maintain a blocklist of well-known virtual ranges. Switching issuer usually clears it.
- Geo mismatch. Signing up in one country and paying with a card from another is the fastest route to a manual review.
- Three declines in a row. Most checkouts lock the payment method after three failures. Change the card instead of pressing the button again.
BIN ranges worth trying on Hulu
Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.
Where these cards are issued
The ranges above carry issuing countries of their own. If a checkout refuses one region, the same card family often exists out of another, and the country pages group what we have tested.
Compare the shortlisted cards side by side
Down to two of them? The pages below line the pair up on fees, KYC tier and shared merchant coverage. That is usually enough to settle it.
Questions we get asked
Will a virtual card actually work on Hulu?
It does. 10 of the 17 cards we tried in September got through, and 100 issuers in the database are flagged as working with this merchant. The failures we logged were range blocks, not empty balances.
Why is my normal bank card declined by Hulu?
It comes down to where the card was issued. Hulu bills through an overseas acquirer, and that acquirer compares the card's country with your account region before the charge ever reaches your bank. It is a region rule, not a credit decision, which is why you never get a fraud alert.
Which one is cheapest for Hulu?
On our numbers Chime leads at 9.8 out of 10. The rest is down to top-up cost: waived top-up fees matter more than a lower issuance fee once you are past month one.
Can I use a card with no KYC for Hulu?
Every card on this page asks for something. Chime, Privacy.com, Cash App, Revolut stop at an ID, with no address documents, which is usually enough for a subscription.
What does Hulu cost in total?
The card fee is the smallest part. What you actually pay is a top-up charge on every reload plus the Hulu plan. 5 of the 10 cards here skip the issuance fee entirely.
Do I have to keep the card open between Hulu renewals?
Only if you want the renewal to clear. Where the issuer allows it, freeze the card rather than closing it, then unfreeze a day before the renewal date. A closed card cannot be brought back.
How we test
17 cards went through a live Hulu checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
