Does Afterpay Give You a Virtual Card?

Afterpay offers a digital card in the app that you add to a wallet, plus per-transaction virtual numbers. Ally Bank issues its own virtual debit card.

Afterpay's answer is a wallet-first digital card, and its exact shape depends on your region and account.

The Afterpay Card

Afterpay's card is digital rather than physical. You set it up in the app under the In-Store or Card section, verify by SMS, and add it to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay. From there it works at contactless terminals and generates per-transaction numbers for online use, splitting each purchase into four installments.

Availability depends on your account and region, and the full number is generally not displayed for manual copying the way a traditional virtual card shows it, because the card leans on wallet tokenisation.

What that means at checkout

In store, tap with the wallet card. Online, Afterpay appears as a payment option at participating merchants, or generates a single-use number for that purchase. Merchants that place holds, such as hotels and gas pumps, remain the weak spot for any Afterpay card.

For merchants without Afterpay integration, the single-use number is what lets you pay anywhere the underlying network is accepted.

The Ally comparison

Ally Bank answers the same question with a more traditional virtual debit card. Eligible Ally customers with a physical card can create a virtual debit card in the app, complete with its own 16-digit number, expiry and single-use CVV, usable for online purchases and recurring payments. The same account limits and card locks apply.

The difference is the model: Afterpay's card exists to finance a purchase, while Ally's virtual card is simply your debit card in digital form.
