Can You Use a Virtual Card at Walmart?

A network virtual card works on Walmart.com and in Walmart stores through a wallet. Walmart gift cards are a separate product.

Walmart accepts normal card payments, so the question is really whether your specific virtual card behaves like one.

Online at Walmart.com

If your virtual card is a real Visa or Mastercard number with an expiry and CVV, it keys into Walmart.com checkout like any other card. The usual caveats apply: the billing address must match what the issuer holds, and the amount must be within the card's balance or cap.

Cards that fail online are usually promotional prepaid cards with restrictions, or single-use cards generated for a different merchant or amount.

In Walmart stores

In store, the card needs to be in a wallet. Add the virtual card to Apple Pay or Google Pay and tap at the contactless terminal; a card number on a screen cannot be swiped. Most Walmart registers support contactless, and self-checkout increasingly does too.

If your virtual card cannot be added to a wallet, in-store use is off the table regardless of what network it runs on.

Gift cards versus payment cards

Walmart sells digital gift cards that deliver by email, and those are balances at Walmart rather than payment cards. They are the right tool for gifting and the wrong tool for paying a bill, because the balance only spends at Walmart.

Be careful with third-party gift card resellers. Buying discounted gift cards is a common scam vector, and a code that does not work is nearly impossible to recover.

Frequently asked

Can I use a virtual card at Walmart?

Online yes, if it is a network card. In store, only through Apple Pay or Google Pay at contactless terminals.

Does Walmart accept prepaid cards?

Generally yes at checkout, though prepaid cards struggle with any pre-authorisation or deposit scenario.

Can I buy a Walmart gift card with a virtual card?

Usually yes online, but some issuers code gift card purchases as cash equivalents, which can be blocked or charged fees.

Why did my virtual card decline at self-checkout?

The card may not be in a wallet, the balance may be short, or the issuer may block the merchant category.
