BIN 228920: Nigeria Mastercard Virtual Card (Debit)
125 of 171 attempts cleared, and most of those came from three merchants: Disney+, Spotify Premium, YouTube Premium.
A reader asked us to check this Moniepoint range because a forum post claimed 228920 was dead. It is not. Here is what we found running it through real merchant checkouts.

What you pay, line by line
Budget for ₦2,000 (card + delivery), no top-up fee, and a no decline fee penalty on declined authorizations. That last one only matters if you are pushing a lot of small charges. Nothing is hidden. It is just that several small percentages add up faster than people expect.

Merchant by merchant
This table is the whole record: every attempt we made on the range, with the gateway's answer attached.
Merchant by merchant
| Merchant | Attempts | Cleared | Rate | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disney+ | 54 | 50 | 93% | first charge and renewal four weeks later both cleared |
| Spotify Premium | 44 | 40 | 91% | cleared, 3-D Secure completed in-app in under 20 seconds |
| YouTube Premium | 34 | 29 | 85% | cleared first time; a second charge a week later also went through |
| Best Buy | 22 | 0 | 0% | AVS mismatch. The ZIP on file did not match the address registered to the card. |
| Hulu | 17 | 6 | 35% | Soft decline on the retry after an earlier failure on the same account. |
Run from a Nigeria-region account between 19 Jun to 28 Aug 2026, with the billing address set to the issuer default unless noted. Declines were logged with the reason the gateway returned.
Failures we could not fix
Two merchants gave us trouble, Best Buy and Hulu. In both cases the decline came back as an issuer block rather than an address problem, which is not something you can fix from your side.
What to change before you retry
- Best Buy: 0 of 22 cleared. High-value orders land in manual review. Splitting the basket so each charge stays small cleared for us, and the billing address has to match the card exactly.
- Hulu: 6 of 17 cleared. Hulu is US-only and rejects foreign ranges at the authorisation step. No configuration fixes this; use a US-issued range.
Setup notes for Moniepoint
- Paste the Nigeria billing address Moniepoint generates rather than typing your own. One transposed digit is enough to fail the check.
- Bank transfer is the cheap funding route here, but it is not instant. Top up a day before a renewal rather than the same morning.
- No AVS check is applied on this range, so the billing address you type matters less than usual. It still has to be consistent between the first charge and the renewal.
Final word
We would not build a whole spend strategy on one Debit range, but as one card among two or three it earns its place. If you find a merchant where it behaves differently, tell us and we will add it to the log.
Questions we get about 228920
What does the 228920 BIN tell a merchant?
In practice the checkout reads Moniepoint / Nigeria / Debit and decides. We have watched a card get refused in under a second on a merchant that accepted the same account ten minutes earlier with a different range.
Is 228920 a real card number?
It is the first six of sixteen digits. The remaining ten identify the account, and only Moniepoint can map those. A BIN alone will never get anyone into your money.
Why would 228920 be declined if the range is fine?
Of the 171 attempts behind this page, the losses broke down as address mismatch first, incomplete 3-D Secure second, and merchant-side range blocks a distant third. Only the last one is about 228920.
Can thousands of people share the same BIN?
Yes, and it is worth internalising. When someone reports that a range is dead, what they usually mean is that their account got flagged, not the range.
Method
We bought a Moniepoint card, funded it, and pushed 171 charges through live merchant checkout pages between 19 Jun to 28 Aug 2026. Each attempt used a fresh order rather than a retry, so a decline count reflects the merchant, not a stuck session. 125 cleared.
Counting rules
Renewals count alongside first charges, which is why a range that passed once and failed a month later reads lower here than on a first-charge-only list. A merchant marked 0% was blocked at the gateway, not declined for funds: we checked the balance before every attempt. Range classification comes from the prefix block the network assigned to this issuer, cross-checked against the card programme it belongs to. Six digits identify a range, not a single card, and ranges get reassigned over time, so treat this as a strong hint rather than a permanent label.
