Paying for Contabo With a Virtual Card: What Actually Passes
Chime, Bleap, YEX. If the first one trips the AVS check, move to the next instead of retrying the same card.
The decline you are seeing on Contabo is a card-range problem, not a balance problem. 27 cards tested this month, 10 usable.
Why Contabo turns your card down
A card picked at random off a marketplace will fail Contabo roughly half the time. The BIN range matters more than the balance sitting on the card.

The three we would actually use
- Chime is the one we would actually keep. Free up front, no top-up fee on top-ups, and the 3DS flow does not demand a phone number you do not have.
- Bleap is the cheapest route we found: $0 to issue, 0% on funding, and it cleared on the first attempt.
- YEX is the cheapest route we found: $0 to issue, no top-up fee on funding, and it cleared on the first attempt.
Paying Contabo with a virtual card, start to finish
-
1
Open the account
Have an ID ready; all 3 want one before they will issue. The check runs automatically. Set up 2FA while you wait, not once money is on the card.
-
2
Load a small balance
USDT and bank transfer both work. Crypto lands in minutes; a transfer is cheaper but can sit overnight. Load one month first.
-
3
Create the card
Multiple cards per account, so keep Contabo on a dedicated one. Lock it to the merchant and cap the spend. Both take seconds and neither costs anything.
-
4
Enter the details at checkout
There is an address check. Chime issues a US General address. Paste that one, because AVS fails on a single wrong character.
-
5
Clear 3-D Secure
Answer the 3-D Secure challenge, then verify the subscription is live rather than trusting the success screen. Pending charges do happen.
If it still will not go through
Between them these cover almost every failed attempt we have logged.
- Billing address mismatch (Chime issues a US General address). AVS compares what you type against the address on file, and it fails on a single transposed digit. Paste it instead of retyping.
- Monthly cap reached. Cards with a hard monthly limit decline once it is used up, and the message the merchant shows is identical to a fraud block.
- Merchant switched acquirer. When a platform changes processor, ranges that cleared last month start failing with nothing changed on your side. Re-run the card before assuming it is dead.
- Spend limit too tight. If the cap sits below the plan price plus the conversion spread, the authorisation comes back as insufficient rather than blocked.
- Card left frozen from the last test. Issuers sometimes freeze a card after unusual activity and never tell you. Check the app before blaming the merchant.
BIN ranges worth trying on Contabo
Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.
Where these cards are issued
Every range above is tied to an issuing country. When a merchant turns one region away, the same brand frequently issues from a second one — the country pages below collect those.
Compare the shortlisted cards side by side
Down to two of them? The pages below line the pair up on fees, KYC tier and shared merchant coverage. That is usually enough to settle it.
Questions we get asked
Will a virtual card actually work on Contabo?
It does. 10 of the 27 cards we tried in September got through, and 211 issuers in the database are flagged as working with this merchant. The failures we logged were range blocks, not empty balances.
Why is my normal bank card declined by Contabo?
Region, mostly. Contabo routes through an acquirer outside your home market, and that acquirer checks the card's issuing country against your account region first. Your bank never sees the charge, so nothing shows up as fraud on your side.
Which one is cheapest for Contabo?
Chime comes out on top at 9.8 out of 10. After that it depends on how you fund the card. A free top-up beats a cheaper signup fee the moment you keep it running past the first month.
Can I use a card with no KYC for Contabo?
Every card on this page asks for something. Chime, Wallester, MyFin stop at an ID, with no address documents, which is usually enough for a subscription.
What does Contabo cost in total?
Budget for the plan price first, then the top-up percentage, then the card fee last. Of the 10 cards above, 6 charge nothing to issue.
Do I have to keep the card open between Contabo renewals?
It is easier to leave it open, or frozen, than to close it. Closing cannot be undone, and a lapsed renewal is usually more hassle than the card sitting idle.
How we test
27 cards went through a live Contabo checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
