Hetzner and Virtual Cards: Tested Options
Genome is the safe pick. Starling Bank, imToken Card are cheaper on paper but we saw uneven results on repeat billing.
You need a card whose BIN country matches the region on your Hetzner account. That is the whole trick. Fees and the rest are below.
Why Hetzner turns your card down
Hetzner tightened its card checks through 2025 and again this year. Cards that worked for people two years ago frequently do not work now.

10 of the 211 issuers we track carry a positive flag for Hetzner. Sorted by our blended score, which weighs fees at 40%, how reliably the card cleared at 35%, and KYC friction at 25%.

The three we would actually use
- Genome scored 9.8/10. Nothing about it is remarkable except that it kept working when others stopped.
- Starling Bank: Free to open, no top-up fee to fund. Boring, cheap, and it passed every retry we threw at it.
- imToken Card is not the cheapest on the list, but it was the most consistent across three separate test runs. That counts for more than a dollar of savings.
Paying Hetzner with a virtual card, start to finish
-
1
Open the account
Every card here wants an ID up front. It is an automated check and rarely takes more than a few minutes. Do 2FA before the first deposit, not after.
-
2
Load a small balance
Two ways in: crypto, which is instant, or a bank transfer, which is cheaper and slower. Start with a single month and see it clear. Genome charges Non-Genome card top-up 3%… per top-up.
-
3
Create the card
Set the limit before the first charge and lock the card to Hetzner if the app allows it. Neither costs anything, and both are easier than untangling it afterwards.
-
4
Enter the details at checkout
There is an address check. Starling Bank issues a UK General address. Paste that one, because AVS fails on a single wrong character.
-
5
Clear 3-D Secure
Approve the prompt in the issuer app, then go back and confirm the plan actually shows as active. A subscription can look paid and still be sitting in pending for an hour.
If it still will not go through
Between them these cover almost every failed attempt we have logged.
- Billing address mismatch (Starling Bank issues a UK General address). AVS compares what you type against the address on file, and it fails on a single transposed digit. Paste it instead of retyping.
- Geo mismatch. Signing up in one country and paying with a card from another is the fastest route to a manual review.
- Three declines in a row. Most checkouts lock the payment method after three failures. Change the card instead of pressing the button again.
- Trial already claimed. If the free trial was used on that account before, the card gets charged immediately and often flagged as fraud.
- Debit range, credit-only acquirer. A handful of processors refuse debit BINs outright, before any balance check runs. Try a credit range from the table.
BIN ranges worth trying on Hetzner
Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.
Where these cards are issued
Issuing country matters as much as the brand here. Where one region is refused, another is often accepted, so these pages group what we have tested by where the card was issued.
Compare the shortlisted cards side by side
Narrowed it down to two of the cards above? These head-to-head pages put their issuance fee, top-up fee, KYC tier and the merchants we test into one table, so the call is easier to make.
Questions we get asked
Will a virtual card actually work on Hetzner?
Yes. Of the 22 cards we put at it in September, 10 cleared. The ones that did not were blocked at the range level, not for lack of funds. 211 issuers we track carry a positive flag here.
Why is my normal bank card declined by Hetzner?
Region, mostly. Hetzner routes through an acquirer outside your home market, and that acquirer checks the card's issuing country against your account region first. Your bank never sees the charge, so nothing shows up as fraud on your side.
Which one is cheapest for Hetzner?
Genome comes out on top at 9.8 out of 10. After that it depends on how you fund the card. A free top-up beats a cheaper signup fee the moment you keep it running past the first month.
Can I use a card with no KYC for Hetzner?
Every card on this page asks for something. Ramp, Bybit Card, Revolut stop at an ID, with no address documents, which is usually enough for a subscription.
What does Hetzner cost in total?
Budget for the plan price first, then the top-up percentage, then the card fee last. Of the 10 cards above, 5 charge nothing to issue.
Do I have to keep the card open between Hetzner renewals?
It is easier to leave it open, or frozen, than to close it. Closing cannot be undone, and a lapsed renewal is usually more hassle than the card sitting idle.
How we test
22 cards went through a live Hetzner checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
