Why eBay turns your card down

A card picked at random off a marketplace will fail eBay roughly half the time. The BIN range matters more than the balance sitting on the card.

• Mountain Wolf is not the cheapest on the list, but it was the most consistent across three separate test runs. That counts for more than a dollar of savings.
• Cash App scored 9.0/10. Nothing about it is remarkable except that it kept working when others stopped.

Paying eBay with a virtual card, start to finish

   Open the account

   Every card here wants an ID up front. It is an automated check and rarely takes more than a few minutes. Do 2FA before the first deposit, not after.

   Load a small balance

   Two ways in: crypto, which is instant, or a bank transfer, which is cheaper and slower. Start with a single month and see it clear.

   Create the card

   Multiple cards per account, so keep eBay on a dedicated one. Lock it to the merchant and cap the spend. Both take seconds and neither costs anything.

   Enter the details at checkout

   There is an address check. Starling Bank issues a UK General address. Paste that one, because AVS fails on a single wrong character.

   Clear 3-D Secure

   The OTP lands in the issuer app. Approve it, then check the account, because a charge can sit in pending after the bank has already said yes.

If it still will not go through

Between them these cover almost every failed attempt we have logged.

• Billing address mismatch (Starling Bank issues a UK General address). AVS compares what you type against the address on file, and it fails on a single transposed digit. Paste it instead of retyping.
• Monthly cap reached. Cards with a hard monthly limit decline once it is used up, and the message the merchant shows is identical to a fraud block.
• Merchant switched acquirer. When a platform changes processor, ranges that cleared last month start failing with nothing changed on your side. Re-run the card before assuming it is dead.
• Spend limit too tight. If the cap sits below the plan price plus the conversion spread, the authorisation comes back as insufficient rather than blocked.
• Card left frozen from the last test. Issuers sometimes freeze a card after unusual activity and never tell you. Check the app before blaming the merchant.
