BIN 229020 (Canada, Mastercard) - What It Works On
Reliable on App Store, Google Play, Epic Games Store. Everywhere else it was closer to a coin flip, which we will get to.
BipTap Card runs this range for Canada. Six digits, Debit classification, Mastercard rails. Nothing clever about it, which is exactly why it keeps clearing.

Running costs
The money side is simple: no issuance fee, a 3% top-up fee, and no FX markup on anything billed outside USD. No tiers to climb and no minimum spend. We appreciated that after testing products that bury both.

Merchant by merchant
Everything we pushed through this range, including the merchants it never cleared.
Merchant by merchant
| Merchant | Attempts | Cleared | Rate | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| App Store | 76 | 71 | 93% | cleared first time; a second charge a week later also went through |
| Google Play | 62 | 53 | 85% | cleared first time; a second charge a week later also went through |
| Epic Games Store | 48 | 40 | 83% | went through on a fresh card with the issuer's default address |
| StockX | 31 | 0 | 0% | Soft decline on the retry after an earlier failure on the same account. |
| Nike US | 23 | 8 | 35% | 3-D Secure challenge never completed. The order timed out waiting for the OTP. |
Run from a Canada-region account between 17 Jul to 14 Aug 2026, with the billing address set to the issuer default unless noted. Declines were logged with the reason the gateway returned.
Failures we could not fix
Failures were rare but real: StockX declined on three attempts, and we never did get it through.
What to change before you retry
- StockX: 0 of 31 cleared. Charges only happen when a bid is accepted, so the balance has to be sitting there before the seller responds. A card that funds on demand is what fails here, not the range.
- Nike US: 8 of 23 cleared. Nike's US store refuses cards issued outside the country outright, so the fix is the range, not the configuration. A domestic-issued range clears; a foreign one never will.
Setup notes for BipTap Card
- No AVS check is applied on this range, so the billing address you type matters less than usual. It still has to be consistent between the first charge and the renewal.
- Use the Canada address BipTap Card gives you, verbatim. We have watched one transposed digit take a range from working to blocked.
- The 3% top-up fee is the real cost here. Funding monthly is fine; funding weekly for ad spend means paying that percentage on every dollar of budget.
Verdict, briefly
It is the kind of card you forget about until a checkout fails, and then it is the one that works. Take the Debit label seriously though. Some merchant rules treat it differently to credit.
Questions we get about 229020
What does the 229020 BIN tell a merchant?
In practice the checkout reads BipTap Card / Canada / Debit and decides. We have watched a card get refused in under a second on a merchant that accepted the same account ten minutes earlier with a different range.
Is 229020 a real card number?
No, and this trips people up. 229020 is a range identifier shared across every card BipTap Card issues in Canada. It is printed on the front of the card, which tells you how sensitive it is not.
Why would 229020 be declined if the range is fine?
Changing one variable at a time is the only way to diagnose this. Address first, then card, then the connection country. We have seen people change all three and learn nothing.
Can thousands of people share the same BIN?
Yes, and it is worth internalising. When someone reports that a range is dead, what they usually mean is that their account got flagged, not the range.
Method
We bought a BipTap Card card, funded it, and pushed 240 charges through live merchant checkout pages between 17 Jul to 14 Aug 2026. Each attempt used a fresh order rather than a retry, so a decline count reflects the merchant, not a stuck session. 172 cleared.
Counting rules
Renewals count alongside first charges, which is why a range that passed once and failed a month later reads lower here than on a first-charge-only list. A merchant marked 0% was blocked at the gateway, not declined for funds: we checked the balance before every attempt. Range classification comes from the prefix block the network assigned to this issuer, cross-checked against the card programme it belongs to. Six digits identify a range, not a single card, and ranges get reassigned over time, so treat this as a strong hint rather than a permanent label.
