OpenAI API Payment Declined? Virtual Card Options That Work

What we would pick

We would use Chime. It costs the least to keep funded, which matters more than the signup price if you are on a monthly plan.

OpenAI API blocks most mainland-issued cards outright. We pushed 19 virtual cards through its checkout in September and kept the 10 that actually cleared.

Why OpenAI API turns your card down

OpenAI API tightened its card checks through 2025 and again this year. Cards that worked for people two years ago frequently do not work now.

Both fixes are on your side of the transaction: match the card's country to the region your OpenAI API account is registered in, and paste the issuer's billing address without editing it.

Cards that worked on OpenAI API

10 of the 56 issuers we track carry a positive flag for OpenAI API. Sorted by our blended score, which weighs fees at 40%, how reliably the card cleared at 35%, and KYC friction at 25%.

The three we would actually use

Paying OpenAI API with a virtual card, start to finish

  1. 1

    Open the account

All 3 ask for an ID before the first card exists. The check is automated and usually clears in minutes. Turn on 2FA before you fund anything.

  2. 2

    Load a small balance

It is bank transfer or nothing here, so plan a day ahead; transfers sit overnight. Keep a small buffer above the plan price.

  3. 3

    Create the card

Set the limit before the first charge and lock the card to OpenAI API if the app allows it. Neither costs anything, and both are easier than untangling it afterwards.

  4. 4

    Enter the details at checkout

OpenAI API checks the address. Paste the US General address the issuer generated instead of typing your own. One transposed digit is enough to fail it.

BIN ranges worth trying on OpenAI API

Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.

Where these cards are issued

Issuing country matters as much as the brand here. Where one region is refused, another is often accepted, so these pages group what we have tested by where the card was issued.

Questions we get asked

Will a virtual card actually work on OpenAI API?

It does. 10 of the 19 cards we tried in September got through, and 56 issuers in the database are flagged as working with this merchant. The failures we logged were range blocks, not empty balances.

Why is my normal bank card declined by OpenAI API?

Region, mostly. OpenAI API routes through an acquirer outside your home market, and that acquirer checks the card's issuing country against your account region first. Your bank never sees the charge, so nothing shows up as fraud on your side.

Which one is cheapest for OpenAI API?

Chime scores highest here at 9.8/10. Past that, the funding route decides it, because a card with free top-ups beats a cheaper signup fee the moment you reload twice.

Can I use a card with no KYC for OpenAI API?

None of the 10 cards above skip verification entirely. The lightest are Chime, Privacy.com, Bybit Card, Revolut, which ask for an ID but no address proof. That is usually the better trade for a recurring subscription.

What does OpenAI API cost in total?

The card fee is the smallest part. What you actually pay is a top-up charge on every reload plus the OpenAI API plan. 5 of the 10 cards here skip the issuance fee entirely.

Do I have to keep the card open between OpenAI API renewals?

Yes, unless you plan to re-enter the card every month. Freeze it between charges if the issuer supports that; closing it means starting over at the next renewal.

How we test

19 cards went through a live OpenAI API checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
