Best Virtual Cards for Anthropic API
Starling Bank first. Lowest combined cost of the cards that actually worked, and the 3DS step does not ask for a phone number.
There is nothing exotic about paying for Anthropic API with a virtual card. You just have to stop using one that gets auto-declined. These 10 do not.
Why Anthropic API turns your card down
The decline is a BIN mismatch. Anthropic API bills through an overseas acquirer, and that acquirer compares three things: the country your card was issued in, the billing address on file, and the country your account is registered in. Two out of three is not enough.

The three we would actually use
- Starling Bank is the cheapest route we found: Free to issue, no top-up fee on funding, and it cleared on the first attempt.
- COCA is the one we would actually keep. Free up front, no top-up fee on top-ups, and the 3DS flow does not demand a phone number you do not have.
- We like Revolut mainly for the funding side. no top-up fee per top-up adds up if you pay monthly, but it is still the lowest of the cards that worked.
Paying Anthropic API with a virtual card, start to finish
-
1
Open the account
All 3 ask for an ID before the first card exists. The check is automated and usually clears in minutes. Turn on 2FA before you fund anything.
-
2
Load a small balance
Two ways in: crypto, which is instant, or a bank transfer, which is cheaper and slower. Start with a single month and see it clear.
-
3
Create the card
Multiple cards per account, so keep Anthropic API on a dedicated one. Lock it to the merchant and cap the spend. Both take seconds and neither costs anything.
-
4
Enter the details at checkout
Anthropic API checks the address. Paste the UK General address the issuer generated instead of typing your own. One transposed digit is enough to fail it.
-
5
Clear 3-D Secure
Approve the prompt in the issuer app, then go back and confirm the plan actually shows as active. A subscription can look paid and still be sitting in pending for an hour.
If it still will not go through
Between them these cover almost every failed attempt we have logged.
- Billing address mismatch (Starling Bank issues a UK General address). AVS compares what you type against the address on file, and it fails on a single transposed digit. Paste it instead of retyping.
- Three declines in a row. Most checkouts lock the payment method after three failures. Change the card instead of pressing the button again.
- Trial already claimed. If the free trial was used on that account before, the card gets charged immediately and often flagged as fraud.
- Debit range, credit-only acquirer. A handful of processors refuse debit BINs outright, before any balance check runs. Try a credit range from the table.
- Monthly cap reached. Cards with a hard monthly limit decline once it is used up, and the message the merchant shows is identical to a fraud block.
BIN ranges worth trying on Anthropic API
Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.
Where these cards are issued
Issuing country matters as much as the brand here. Where one region is refused, another is often accepted, so these pages group what we have tested by where the card was issued.

Questions we get asked
Will a virtual card actually work on Anthropic API?
It does. 10 of the 18 cards we tried in September got through, and 42 issuers in the database are flagged as working with this merchant. The failures we logged were range blocks, not empty balances.
Why is my normal bank card declined by Anthropic API?
It comes down to where the card was issued. Anthropic API bills through an overseas acquirer, and that acquirer compares the card's country with your account region before the charge ever reaches your bank. It is a region rule, not a credit decision, which is why you never get a fraud alert.
Which one is cheapest for Anthropic API?
Starling Bank scores highest here at 9.8/10. Past that, the funding route decides it, because a card with free top-ups beats a cheaper signup fee the moment you reload twice.
Can I use a card with no KYC for Anthropic API?
None of the 10 cards above skip verification entirely. The lightest are Revolut, Privacy.com, which ask for an ID but no address proof. That is usually the better trade for a recurring subscription.
What does Anthropic API cost in total?
Three things add up: the one-off card fee, a top-up fee each time you fund, and the Anthropic API plan itself. On this page 5 of the 10 cards cost nothing to create. Spend limits and freezing are free everywhere.
Do I have to keep the card open between Anthropic API renewals?
Yes, unless you plan to re-enter the card every month. Freeze it between charges if the issuer supports that; closing it means starting over at the next renewal.
How we test
18 cards went through a live Anthropic API checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
