Booking.com Payment Declined? Virtual Card Options That Work
Top three for September: Starling Bank, MyFin, Revolut. Starling Bank came out ahead once issuance and funding fees were added up.
You need a card whose BIN country matches the region on your Booking.com account. That is the whole trick. Fees and the rest are below.
Why Booking.com turns your card down
Your bank is not blocking anything, the merchant is. Booking.com sees a card range it does not like and issues a soft decline before the authorization ever reaches your issuer. That is why you get no fraud alert and no explanation.

10 of the 211 issuers we track carry a positive flag for Booking.com. Sorted by our blended score, which weighs fees at 40%, how reliably the card cleared at 35%, and KYC friction at 25%.

The three we would actually use
- Starling Bank: Free to open, no top-up fee to fund. Boring, cheap, and it passed every retry we threw at it.
- MyFin scored 9.2/10. Nothing about it is remarkable except that it kept working when others stopped.
- Take Revolut if you want the lowest issuance cost (Free). Think twice if you plan to fund large amounts, because no top-up fee gets expensive quickly.
Paying Booking.com with a virtual card, start to finish
-
1
Open the account
All 3 ask for an ID before the first card exists. The check is automated and usually clears in minutes. Turn on 2FA before you fund anything.
-
2
Load a small balance
Two ways in: crypto, which is instant, or a bank transfer, which is cheaper and slower. Start with a single month and see it clear.
-
3
Create the card
You can spin up more than one card here, which is worth doing: Booking.com gets its own, everything else stays off it. Set the limit just above the plan price.
-
4
Enter the details at checkout
Booking.com checks the address. Paste the UK General address the issuer generated instead of typing your own. One transposed digit is enough to fail it.
-
5
Clear 3-D Secure
Approve the prompt in the issuer app, then go back and confirm the plan actually shows as active. A subscription can look paid and still be sitting in pending for an hour.
If it still will not go through
Between them these cover almost every failed attempt we have logged.
- Billing address mismatch (Starling Bank issues a UK General address). AVS compares what you type against the address on file, and it fails on a single transposed digit. Paste it instead of retyping.
- Trial already claimed. If the free trial was used on that account before, the card gets charged immediately and often flagged as fraud.
- Debit range, credit-only acquirer. A handful of processors refuse debit BINs outright, before any balance check runs. Try a credit range from the table.
- Monthly cap reached. Cards with a hard monthly limit decline once it is used up, and the message the merchant shows is identical to a fraud block.
- Merchant switched acquirer. When a platform changes processor, ranges that cleared last month start failing with nothing changed on your side. Re-run the card before assuming it is dead.
BIN ranges worth trying on Booking.com
Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.
Where these cards are issued
The ranges above carry issuing countries of their own. If a checkout refuses one region, the same card family often exists out of another, and the country pages group what we have tested.

Questions we get asked
Will a virtual card actually work on Booking.com?
In our tests, yes. We ran 15 cards against it in September and the 10 below are the ones that went through. Failures were almost all range blocks rather than balance problems, and 211 issuers in our database carry a positive flag for this merchant.
Why is my normal bank card declined by Booking.com?
Region, mostly. Booking.com routes through an acquirer outside your home market, and that acquirer checks the card's issuing country against your account region first. Your bank never sees the charge, so nothing shows up as fraud on your side.
Which one is cheapest for Booking.com?
Starling Bank comes out on top at 9.7 out of 10. After that it depends on how you fund the card. A free top-up beats a cheaper signup fee the moment you keep it running past the first month.
Can I use a card with no KYC for Booking.com?
No card here is verification-free. The least demanding are MyFin, Revolut, Wallester, Chime, which stop at an ID. For a charge that repeats every month, that is the sensible middle ground.
What does Booking.com cost in total?
Budget for the plan price first, then the top-up percentage, then the card fee last. Of the 10 cards above, 8 charge nothing to issue.
Do I have to keep the card open between Booking.com renewals?
Only if you want the renewal to clear. Where the issuer allows it, freeze the card rather than closing it, then unfreeze a day before the renewal date. A closed card cannot be brought back.
How we test
15 cards went through a live Booking.com checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
