X Ads and Virtual Cards: Tested Options
Start with Genome, then Revolut, Starling Bank. Both cleared X Ads on the first attempt in our September run.
If you have already spent an afternoon retrying the same card on X Ads, stop. It is almost always the same three causes, and a virtual card fixes two of them.
Why X Ads turns your card down
X Ads tightened its card checks through 2025 and again this year. Cards that worked for people two years ago frequently do not work now.

10 of the 71 issuers we track carry a positive flag for X Ads. Sorted by our blended score, which weighs fees at 40%, how reliably the card cleared at 35%, and KYC friction at 25%.

The three we would actually use
- Genome is the one we would actually keep. Virtual card 1 EUR (first 10); 10 EUR f… up front, Non-Genome card top-up 3%… on top-ups, and the 3DS flow does not demand a phone number you do not have.
- Revolut is not the cheapest on the list, but it was the most consistent across three separate test runs. That counts for more than a dollar of savings.
- Starling Bank scored 8.7/10. Nothing about it is remarkable except that it kept working when others stopped.
Paying X Ads with a virtual card, start to finish
-
1
Open the account
Every card here wants an ID up front. It is an automated check and rarely takes more than a few minutes. Do 2FA before the first deposit, not after.
-
2
Load a small balance
USDT and bank transfer both work. Crypto lands in minutes; a transfer is cheaper but can sit overnight. Load one month first. Genome charges Non-Genome card top-up 3%… per top-up.
-
3
Create the card
Multiple cards per account, so keep X Ads on a dedicated one. Lock it to the merchant and cap the spend. Both take seconds and neither costs anything.
-
4
Enter the details at checkout
X Ads checks the address. Paste the Global address the issuer generated instead of typing your own. One transposed digit is enough to fail it.
-
5
Clear 3-D Secure
Answer the 3-D Secure challenge, then verify the subscription is live rather than trusting the success screen. Pending charges do happen.
If it still will not go through
Between them these cover almost every failed attempt we have logged.
- Billing address mismatch (Revolut issues a Global address). AVS compares what you type against the address on file, and it fails on a single transposed digit. Paste it instead of retyping.
- Debit range, credit-only acquirer. A handful of processors refuse debit BINs outright, before any balance check runs. Try a credit range from the table.
- Monthly cap reached. Cards with a hard monthly limit decline once it is used up, and the message the merchant shows is identical to a fraud block.
- Merchant switched acquirer. When a platform changes processor, ranges that cleared last month start failing with nothing changed on your side. Re-run the card before assuming it is dead.
- Spend limit too tight. If the cap sits below the plan price plus the conversion spread, the authorisation comes back as insufficient rather than blocked.
BIN ranges worth trying on X Ads
Each range has its own issuer, country and card type. If a merchant blocks one, move to another rather than retrying.
Where these cards are issued
The ranges above carry issuing countries of their own. If a checkout refuses one region, the same card family often exists out of another, and the country pages group what we have tested.
Compare the shortlisted cards side by side
Narrowed it down to two of the cards above? These head-to-head pages put their issuance fee, top-up fee, KYC tier and the merchants we test into one table, so the call is easier to make.
Questions we get asked
Will a virtual card actually work on X Ads?
It does. 10 of the 16 cards we tried in September got through, and 71 issuers in the database are flagged as working with this merchant. The failures we logged were range blocks, not empty balances.
Why is my normal bank card declined by X Ads?
It comes down to where the card was issued. X Ads bills through an overseas acquirer, and that acquirer compares the card's country with your account region before the charge ever reaches your bank. It is a region rule, not a credit decision, which is why you never get a fraud alert.
Which one is cheapest for X Ads?
Genome comes out on top at 9.5 out of 10. After that it depends on how you fund the card. A free top-up beats a cheaper signup fee the moment you keep it running past the first month.
Can I use a card with no KYC for X Ads?
One of the 10 cards above is listed as No KYC: VCard. It works, but it declines more often and the fees are worse than an issuer that takes an ID.
What does X Ads cost in total?
Budget for the plan price first, then the top-up percentage, then the card fee last. Of the 10 cards above, 7 charge nothing to issue.
Do I have to keep the card open between X Ads renewals?
It is easier to leave it open, or frozen, than to close it. Closing cannot be undone, and a lapsed renewal is usually more hassle than the card sitting idle.
How we test
16 cards went through a live X Ads checkout on a real account, and one only counts if the first charge clears and the renewal four weeks later clears too. Cards that pass the trial then fail on renewal get marked down rather than dropped. Fees come from the issuers' own pricing pages, re-checked monthly, and converted at the rate on the verification date when they are not in USD. The full protocol, including how we log declines, is on the methodology page.
